In the early 1930s, an anti-Japanese armed resistance led by the great leader Comrade Kim Il Sung (April 15, 1912-July 8, 1994) was sweeping the northern part of the Korean peninsula and the vast swathes of Northeast China centring on the Mt Paektu area.

When the Korean People’s Revolutionary Army was formed by him on April 25, 1932 to liberate Korea from Japan’s military occupation, it was only some 100 strong. It could not get state backing or support from a regular army. But the KPRA grew stronger throughout its ten-odd-year struggle that culminated in Korea’s liberation.

Many wonder what created this miracle.

It is said that Kim Il Sung already put forward a plan to wage a decisive battle against the Japanese occupiers through an all-people uprising combined with the general offensive of the KPRA. Accordingly, the Association for the Restoration of the Fatherland was formed and spread across the country, uniting all people opposed to Japan’s military rule, irrespective of ideology, political view, religious belief and property. Small units and groups of the KPRA formed production guerrillas, workers’ shock brigades and other paramilitary organizations, as well as secret bases in the mountainous areas throughout the country, expanding and developing them.

According to Japanese documents, more than 180 anti-Japanese underground organizations were found out in Korea in 1942. After all, if the unfound organizations were added, the number would be countless. This means that Kim Il Sung must have mobilized tens of millions of fellow countrymen against the Japanese aggressors.

Japanese documents said that four divisions composed exclusively of Koreans were preparing for landing and parachuting operations in the Maritime Province of the Soviet Union and the Korean border areas and 100 000-strong Korean troops were poised for a decisive battle against the Kwantung Army of Japan; young Korean people, who had evaded conscription and drafting, formed armed groups and built bases in deep forests in a bid to join the advance of the KPRA.

In fact, when Kim Il Sung issued an order of final offensive operations to liberate Korea, all-people resistance organizations in the homeland rose up in keeping with the general offensive of the KPRA and destroyed enemy ruling organs in their regions. According to data available, such resistance organizations and armed units at home, let alone North and South Hamgyong provinces, raided nearly one thousand enemy ruling organs in a week alone in mid-August 1945.

July 27, 2026 marks the 73rd anniversary of victory the Korean people achieved in the Fatherland Liberation War (June 25, 1950-July 27, 1953) by repulsing the armed invasion by the imperialist allied forces headed by the United States.

The then two-year-old Democratic People’s Republic of Korea defeated the United States, which had been boastingof being the “strongest” in the world, and its satellite forces, in the three-year war. It was a miracle unprecedented in history.

The victory in the war was the fruition of the great leader Comrade Kim Il Sung’s Juche-oriented military ideas, brilliant strategies and tactics and unexcelled leadership, as well as the will to defeat the enemy, unparalleled bravery and mass heroism displayed by the Korean people, who were firmly rallied around him.

Regarding the great spiritual strength of the masses as a decisive factor in achieving victory in the war, Supreme Commander Kim Il Sung put forward the slogan “Everything for Victory in the War!” and aroused all the people and soldiers for the sacred struggle for defending their motherland.

He created unique strategies, tactics and art of war, including immediate and decisive counterattack against the enemy’s surprise armed invasion, formation of the second front by regular army units, powerful general counteroffensive, positive positional defence, night action, tunnel warfare, aircraft- and tank-hunting team movements and snipers’ team activity, paralyzing the enemy’s numerical and technical superiority.

He also met the soldiers of the Korean People’s Army and other people, instilling confidence, courage and wisdom in them. His affection and trust served as a source of strength for them in performing heroic feats and achieving victory in the war.

Thus he not only defended the prestige, honour and sovereignty of his country and its independent development environment but also firmly safeguarded the peace of humankind by checking and crushing the US strategy for world domination and preventing another world war. His exploits will shine generation after generation.

Today marks the 32nd anniversary of the demise of President Kim Il Sung, the father of socialist Korea and founder of the Workers’ Party of Korea and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. More than three decades later, the Korean people still deeply miss him. They recall his warm love for the people and emphasize that, through his outstanding leadership, he laid a lasting foundation for the prosperity of all generations to come.

One of the key aspects of President Kim Il Sung‘s political philosophy and his lifelong motto was “to believe in the people as in Heaven”. As he once explained, the principles he chose to follow were: first, to respect and serve the people as his God; second, to devote everything to them; and third, to do everything by relying on their strength.

He believed in the people’s inexhaustible strength and led them to achieve miracles.

When President Kim Il Sung was born, his motherland was under Japanese colonial rule. The Korean people were deprived of their country and ceaselessly exposed to extreme humiliation and mistreatment. From an early age, he dedicated himself to the struggle for national liberation. After many years of determined and arduous armed resistance, he led the anti-Japanese struggle to victory over the occupying forces.

Just a few years after Korea’s liberation from Japanese colonial rule, the US ignited a war against the newly established DPRK, less than two years old at the time. The young country had to face a technologically and numerically superior enemy. Progressive people around the world were concerned about the fate of the DPRK. However, President Kim Il Sung achieved the impossible, once again leading the struggle to victory. Thanks to his military strategy and leadership, the army and people of the DPRK succeeded in driving back the invading forces.

Since the country’s liberation he devoted himself tirelessly to improving the well-being and happiness of the Korean people. He spent his time among ordinary citizens, traveling to every corner of the country to have frank discussions with them and work to improve their living conditions. Although officials around him tried to persuade him to take some rest, he continued working without pause, as he regarded caring for the people and seeing them happy as his rest.

He inspected more than 20 600 factories, farms, military units, and other places throughout his lifetime. In the course of these field guidance visits, he traveled more than 578 000 kilometers – equivalent to circling the Earth about 14 and a half times. Under his leadership, the Korean people completed the historic task of socialist industrialization in just 14 years, laying a solid foundation for an independent national economy.

Today the Korean people are achieving amazing miracles under the outstanding leadership of the respected Marshal Kim Jong Un. The Marshal works hard every day to turn the aspirations and ideals of the Korean people into reality, without taking a break and regarding it as his lifelong motto to believe in the people as in Heaven, as President Kim Il Sung did.

The Korean War broke out between the DPRK and the US-led forces on June 25, 1950.

On the very day when the fiercest war ever since WWII started, US President Truman, Secretary of State Acheson and adviser to the Department of State Dulles were all greatly “surprised” to hear about the outbreak of the war, while spending the weekend, on a trip or enjoying a dinner. MacArthur, commander of the US Armed Forces in the Far East, was “sleeping in his bedroom not knowing what was happening.”

The US has spread such a worn-out cliché over the past decades.

But there is evidence to the contrary.

The US spent US$ 2.627 billion arming the troops of the ROK between 1948 and 1950 and dispatched military advisers to the ROK army up to battalion level.

Declassified documents state that Dulles on his visit to the ROK on June 17, 1950, in his capacity as adviser to the US Department of State inspected the border area and gave the order to launch an offensive while spreading false propaganda that the DPRK is the first to invade.

The then commander of the 8th infantry division of the ROK army recalled: “I was on alert as the commander of a frontline division. Outing was banned. I went on to get into the fight in the early hours of June 25.”

The navy chief of staff of the ROK army confessed that “the war was actually started by a provocation from the ROK.” A former staff officer of the headquarters of the US Armed Forces in the Far East said that “the Korean war was unleashed by the ROK army under the direct order of the General Headquarters of the US Army Forces based in Japan.”

The US mobilized huge armed forces against the DPRK, a fledgling state that had been liberated from Japanese colonial rule less than five years earlier, had formed its regular army only two years earlier, and had established its sovereignty just one year and nine months earlier. Besides, 15 US allies joined the war.

Facts tell that the US had scrupulously planned and implemented the war scenario on the Korean peninsula in a bid to seek hegemony after WWII. The truth of history refocuses spotlight on the root cause of the ceaseless wars and disputes around the world.

The temple was originally built in 392 during the reign of King Kwanggaetho, the 24th ruler of the Koguryo Kingdom. It was later restored in 1727 during the feudal Joson dynasty.

Kwangbop Temple was destroyed by US bombing during the Korean War, but it was reconstructed in 1990 in its original form.

It is a representative example of architecture from the Koguryo period. There are the Haethal Gate, the gate of the temple, five-storied octagonal pagoda and the main hall where Buddhist priests sit in meditation east and west on both sides of its central axis.

The main hall, painted red and blue, features a two-storied hip-saddle roof.

Inside the hall are three Buddhist statues, including a statue of Shakyamuni, as well as a painting of Buddha.

In the centre of the temple yard there is a five-storied octagonal pagoda, noted for its elegant appearance and harmonious balance with the surrounding buildings.

As a valuable cultural heritage site that reflects the architectural achievements and long cultural traditions of the Korean people, the temple is carefully preserved and maintained as a relic of national treasure.

In February 1991, President Kim Il Sung visited the temple and expressed satisfaction that it had been successfully reconstructed in accordance with historical principles.

In later years, a resting area was created around the temple, allowing visitors to relax and enjoy the surroundings.

The unusual ties between President Kim Il Sung (1912-1994) of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and former President Sukarno of Indonesia are well known around the world.

Objectively, a striking contrast existed between the two leaders. Kim Il Sung was a thoroughgoing communist and atheist while Sukarno was a dyed-in-the-wool nationalist and faithful religionist. Their age gap was more than ten years and their relations as heads of state were no more than two years long. But they were in unusually friendly relations.

There may be several factors contributing to their close ties, but the main factor was that they both aspired to independence and opposed imperialism and dominationism. This is well testified to by the fact that Sukarno advocated self-reliance and self-supporting economy.

During his visit to the DPRK in November 1964 he came to have a good understanding of self-reliance and self-supporting economy and expressed his deep sympathy for them. That’s why in April 1965 he invited Kim Il Sung who was on a visit to his country to a session of the Provisional People’s Consultative Assembly of Indonesia held in Bandung. At the meeting he delivered a political speech in which he stressed the need to switch over to the road of economic independence and hold aloft the banner of self-reliance to that end. He declared that the esteemed Comrade Kim Il Sung who created the famous idea of self-reliance and successfully built a self-supporting economy with bold determination was present at the meeting, and repeated the word Juche denoting the Juche idea four times in Korean. He continued to say proudly that the switchover he had just mentioned referred to strengthening Juche orientation in Indonesia.

He was probably the first foreign state leader who expressed in Korean his admiration for the Juche idea authored by Kim Il Sung and on an official occasion at that. He was sure that when his country with rich natural resources relied on its own efforts in the style of the DPRK, it would surely achieve genuine independence, freed from the neocolonialist yoke of imperialists. Kim Il Sung expressed his active support to Sukarno’s independent and peace-loving stance. It is therefore no accidental that Sukarno definitely made public his determination to turn his country from the dependent economy to a self-supporting economy.

Sukarno conferred the highest order of Indonesia on Kim Il Sung as a token of his respect for the latter who created and applied the Juche idea.

April 15, 2026 is the 114th birth anniversary of President Kim Il Sung.

Regarding “The people are my god” as his motto, he devoted his all throughout his life for the wellbeing of the people.

Continuing the journey of on-site guidance, he discussed state affairs with the people to encourage them to work miracles and innovations, and lent an ear to their simple opinions to reflect their aspirations and demands in the policies of the state and the Workers’ Party of Korea and bring them into reality.

The units he gave on-site guidance at from August 1945, the year when Korea was liberated, to 1994, the year when he passed away, number over 20 600.

Under his guidance, the Koreans became an independent and heroic people, and a people-centred socialist system was built in their country.

Holding him in high esteem as the eternal leader of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, the Korean people are dynamically pushing ahead with the efforts to build theirs into a powerful socialist country true to his lifetime intentions.
